Green End Primary School, M20
At the start of the year, Lucas’s* family were
identified as having very limited access to
books at home. Lucas lives with his mum, a
single parent, and his two younger brothers,
all aged five and under. During an early
home visit before the children started
school, all three boys were observed
watching separate tablets, with the volume
turned up high. There were no books or toys
visible in the home environment.
To help address this, the school took part in
The Children’s Book Project, enabling every
child to receive two free books each term.
Over the year, this meant each child built a
personal collection of six books. The school
also transformed a classroom into a
makeshift bookshop, creating a welcoming
space where children could browse and
choose their own books.
This simple but powerful approach has had
a significant impact. The children began to
engage more positively with reading, and all
three boys have made strong progress in
their early reading development over the
year. Mum has also been supported to
encourage reading at home, helping to build
new routines around shared stories.

confidence in selecting his books. As he
